Tampa Electric and USF Partner to Advance Power Grid Reliability
Tampa Electric and USF Partner to Advance Power Grid Reliability
Tampa Electric is collaborating with the University of South Florida on a research project designed to help identify potential grid problems before they lead to larger disruptions. Supported by a $3.8 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy, the project combines USF’s research expertise with Tampa Electric’s operational experience and data to advance tools for a more reliable electric grid.
At the center of the project is a “digital twin,” a virtual replica of Tampa Electric’s power system that uses real-time data to mirror grid conditions. The technology is being developed to detect unusual activity, help pinpoint where disturbances originate and provide information that supports a faster response. It also allows researchers to test how new batteries, transmission configurations and other changes could affect the grid without disrupting service to customers.
USF researchers are preparing for field-scale demonstrations with Department of Energy officials by the end of 2026. The broader research project is expected to continue through the end of 2028, with the long-term goal of integrating the technology into Tampa Electric’s operations center once fully developed. This partnership reflects Tampa Electric’s commitment to exploring innovative tools that strengthen grid operations and support dependable service for the communities we serve.
